How to Wear Lingerie Outside, According to a Designer and Women Who Do It Well

We’re not going to go on and on about lingerie as outerwear, and we certainly won’t pretend that every bra, slip, or corset in your drawer deserves to be seen. The idea of wearing lingerie beyond the bedroom—how to make it work, which pieces translate best, and perhaps most importantly, what you wear alongside them—has been everywhere from fashion shows to social media, often worn by women who know how to make a visible bra or slip dress look like the most normal thing in the world.

Where things get more interesting is in what you wear with the lingerie. A lace bra beneath an oversized blazer has a completely different effect from the same bra under a sheer top, while a corset with loose jeans can feel miles away from one worn with a skirt. The same goes for slips, bodysuits, and camisoles—each can be pushed more simple, more sexy, or more revealing depending on what you put around it.

In our experience, lingerie works best as outerwear when you style it the same way you would anything else in your closet. Luckily for the rest of us, that exact idea works just as well outside the runway and celebrity-fashion bubble—say, for those of us pairing a bralette with jeans and a blazer for dinner. So keep scrolling to discover how to wear lingerie outside, from bras and bodysuits to corsets, slips, and more.

Meet the Expert

Abril Magi is the founder of Argentine lingerie brand WOLFFIA. She has several years of experience in the lingerie industry, working closely on product design and fit while also focusing on women’s sensuality, confidence, and desire.

Under a Blazer

A blazer is one of the better places to start if you want lingerie to be visible without your entire look revolving around it. Magi likes the contrast between “structure and sensuality,” usually choosing one piece underneath—a lace bra, bodysuit, corset-inspired top, or anything along those lines—then letting the tailoring do most of the rest.

You also don’t need much on display. “Sometimes a small amount of lace or a beautiful neckline underneath an oversized blazer is much more sophisticated than showing the entire piece,” Magi says. We’d follow her lead here and let the blazer open just enough to reveal what’s underneath (a small glimpse tends to go a long way). As Magi notes, lingerie “doesn’t have to belong exclusively to the bedroom.” In this case, it simply becomes part of what you’re wearing.

With Jeans or Trousers

Trousers also give you plenty of room to play with contrast. Magi likes high-waisted bottoms with bodysuits because they create “a very clean silhouette,” while looser, more masculine trousers can work beautifully against lace, sheer fabric, or delicate strappy details. One half of the outfit offers structure, the other offers a little femininity, and in our opinion, neither has to compete for attention.

For beginners, though, the designer suggests starting with something you already know how to wear. “A bodysuit with jeans is probably one of the easiest places to start,” Magi recommends, noting that denim keeps things from straying too far outside your comfort zone, while lingerie introduces a relatively sexier element. She adds, “It feels familiar enough to be comfortable but still allows you to introduce sensuality into an everyday outfit.”

Layered Under a Sheer Top

With a sheer top, whatever you wear underneath becomes part of the outfit whether you mean for it to or not. Magi recommends choosing the lingerie with the same care you’d give the top itself. “If the top already has a lot happening visually, I would choose something simpler underneath,” she says. When it comes to simpler-looking sheer tops, though, there’s more room for lace, texture, or a bra with a design you’re happy to have on display.

How much you show is really the other half of it. Magi doesn’t think there’s a correct level of transparency, only the amount you feel good wearing. “Instead of trying to hide the lingerie, you’re allowing it to become another layer of the styling,” she says. That could mean a bra that’s fully visible through mesh or just enough lace showing through chiffon to register without taking over the outfit.

With a Skirt

Skirts are a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure, depending on whether you’re working with a mini, midi, or maxi. Magi likes to balance proportions, pairing longer, structured, or minimal skirts with a lingerie-inspired top that has more presence, then scaling things back when the skirt is shorter or more dramatic. Bodysuits get a special mention from her, too, thanks to the clean line they create underneath a skirt and the way they stay put at the waist.

And if “lingerie as outerwear” immediately makes you think more skin, Magi makes a good case for separating the two. “For me, the goal isn’t necessarily to make an outfit look ‘sexy.’ It’s to introduce sensuality in a way that still feels elegant and personal,” she explains. “There’s a difference between showing more skin and creating sensuality.” A lace-trimmed neckline, corset-inspired top, or bodysuit can give an outfit that feeling without revealing much at all.

Under an Open Button-Down

Whether you leave a button-down cracked open at the collar, undone to the waist, or completely open, the lingerie underneath becomes part of what people see. Magi tends to prefer “suggestion over complete exposure,” though she’s quick to point out that showing more can work just as well if that’s what you want.

There isn’t one correct amount of skin to show, and Magi wouldn’t pretend otherwise. “If wearing the shirt completely open makes her feel incredible, that’s valid too,” she explains. Buttoned halfway, hanging loose, tied at the waist, or worn wide open—it can all work. As she puts it, “Sensuality shouldn’t come with a set of instructions. It should be something every woman is free to define for herself.”
