Ask an Expert: What Color Bra Should I Wear Under a White Shirt?
A white shirt can be one of the hardest-working—and most dependable—pieces in your closet. What to wear underneath is another question entirely, given that white seems like the obvious answer and often isn’t. In fact, shades closer to your skin tone tend to do a much better disappearing act (and yes, red can work too).
Of course, nude will always be on the menu. But we’d also like to introduce you to a few less obvious options, including deep red, blush, taupe, and brown, depending on your skin tone and the shirt itself. (If the fabric is super thin, some amount of bra may still show through—just throwing that out there.)
So, what color bra should you wear under a white shirt? Ahead, we spoke with a bra fitter to get to the bottom of which colors tend to disappear best—and the ones most likely to peek through.

Nude Bras
For a bra to disappear beneath white, it needs to blend into what’s underneath the shirt: your skin. That’s why nude tends to work so well, provided you’re choosing your nude—not settling for whatever beige happens to be available in your size.
“It’s all about matching your body’s skin tone and undertone,” Brown explains. Depending on your complexion, the closest match might be blush, taupe, caramel, or brown. The less contrast between the bra and your body, the less likely its outline and color are to peek through.
Red Bras
Red may be the last bra color you’d expect to disappear under a white shirt, but there’s more logic behind it than you’d think. Certain shades pick up on the pink, beige, or brown undertones already in your complexion, allowing them to recede beneath white fabric rather than shine through it.
“It’s all in the hues,” Brown says. “The red matches your skin’s undertones.” She explains that the right wavelength and saturation can visually cancel out against those colors in the skin, making the bra less visible. Brown calls it “a bra hack that many don’t know about, or believe until they try it”—which is fair, because this one really does require proof in the mirror.
White Bras
White-on-white sounds like the most obvious pairing in the world, but it can be a little deceptive. Since the bra sits against your skin—not the shirt itself—the deciding factor is how much contrast the white creates underneath the fabric.
“It definitely depends on your skin tone,” Brown explains. “For some with lighter and more pale skin tones, a white bra can work just fine. It doesn’t create a strong contrast against your skin.” On deeper complexions, though, she says a white bra is far more likely to show: “For that reason, most women with more pigmented skin tones tend to wear beige, brown, or black bras under white tops.”
Black Bras
A black bra under a white shirt usually isn’t chosen for its disappearing skills. Instead, it works best when you’re okay with the bra becoming part of the outfit, whether it’s faintly visible beneath a white tee or clearly seen through a sheer button-down.
How much shows depends on the fabric, so give it a quick daylight check before heading out. A thicker cotton shirt may only let a hint of black show through, while linen, ribbed knits, and thin white fabrics are much more likely to reveal the color and outline.
