Ask an Expert: How to Tighten Your Bra Straps When They Keep Falling Down

As anyone who’s ever spent a minute tugging at their bra straps knows, getting them to sit just right can be surprisingly frustrating. Tighten them too much and they start digging into your shoulders. Leave them a little too loose and they’re slipping off before you’ve even left the house. It seems like such a small adjustment, but it can completely change how a bra looks and feels throughout the day.

It’s also one of the most common bra questions for a reason. A couple of small adjustments can completely change how a bra feels, but only if you know what the straps are actually meant to do in the first place. After speaking with bra fit specialists and lingerie experts, we picked up plenty of tips on getting them just right. Ahead, we’ll walk through exactly how to tighten bra straps, why they sometimes keep slipping no matter what you do, and the telltale signs you’ve gone a little too far.

How to Tighten Bra Straps Properly

If you’ve never adjusted your bra straps before, don’t worry. Find the small plastic or metal slider on each strap, then slide it upward to shorten the strap or downward to loosen it. Adjust one strap at a time, then check that both sides feel even.

As you’re making those adjustments, the straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders. “Start with the band snug but comfortable,” Lehman says. “The band is meant to provide 80-90% of the support.” From there, she recommends adjusting the straps so they sit securely without digging into your shoulders or slipping off.

It’s tempting to keep tightening the straps until the cups feel more supportive, but that’s not their job. “The straps are only meant to tack the bra to your body and provide about 10-20% of the support,” Lehman explains. If you have to pull the straps extremely tight to feel supported, the issue may be the fit of the bra rather than the straps themselves.

Once you’ve finished adjusting them, wear the bra for a few minutes and move around as you normally would. If the straps stay in place, feel comfortable, and the cups continue sitting where they should, you’ve probably found the right adjustment.

Why Bra Straps Keep Slipping

It can be frustrating when your bra straps keep sliding off your shoulders, especially after you’ve already tightened them. In many cases, though, the straps aren’t the real problem.

“There could be a couple reasons for this,” Lehman explains. “The band is too loose, forcing the straps to take on too much weight. Over time, the straps will stretch too much and will slip.” In other words, the straps are trying to do a job that really belongs to the band.

Shoulder shape can also make a difference. If you have sloping shoulders and you’re confident your band already fits well, Lehman recommends looking for bras “that have an anchor point closer to the hook and eye part of the band.” Another option is a bra with “J hooks,” which can quickly convert the straps into a racerback style to help keep them in place.

Signs Your Bra Straps Are Too Tight

It might seem like tighter straps automatically mean more support, but that’s not usually the case. If your shoulders are sore by the end of the day, your bra could be telling you it’s time to loosen things up.

“If the straps are digging into your shoulders, leaving red marks, or causing discomfort, they are too tight,” Lehman says. She adds that this “often occurs when the band is too loose,” so many people end up overtightening the straps to make up for the missing support.

If you’re constantly adjusting your straps and still can’t get comfortable, don’t assume you’re doing something wrong. Sometimes it’s simply the wrong fit. As Lehman recommends, “go see your local bra fitter to get the right fit for you.”
